Welcome to the journey!

“We don’t practice yoga to get better at yoga. We practice yoga to get better at life.” This quote changed the way I approached my practice in a deeply profound way, even if it did come off of a commercial for yoga props.
Like many yoga instructors, I have been hesitant to start teaching (even virtually). I have been practicing yoga in some form or another for 18 years now, yet I rarely do arm balances. I still can not do the splits without props and sometimes I have to hold on to something for balance in single-leg standing poses. How can I teach others when my own practice doesn’t appear to advance?
Then I realized that what was holding me back from teaching yoga was the same thing that keeps a lot of people from starting a practice: acceptance of ourselves and our bodies.
It is ok to practice asanas (poses) if you are not a physically flexible person. It is ok to practice meditation if your brain just keeps going and going or you can’t sit still. It is ok to practice pranayama (breathing exercises) if you have respiratory issues, with additional guidance of course. IT IS OK!
This can be especially difficult if you have chronic health issues, which is ironic because your body needs the self-care that it prevents you from practicing at times. But the body that you are in is the one that you’ve got, with its genetics, injuries, illnesses, and all. Learn to work with it when it feels like it is working against you, and how to adapt your practice over time.
